Winter Sunday
Menacingly the Buck stove crouches Before the old brick wall. Its doors are open. The fine mesh screen holds back the sparks.
Its heat springs across the room Against my legs As I cross them where I sit On the small sofa. I smooth the white paper:
I twist the black, felt-tipped pen And wonder why I can't describe the fire. I long to write about the lake I see beyond the window, Or tell of one small dong running beside her larger Mother, Lucky and Lady running together. I hear the clock tick. It numbs the senses, I think. I gaze hypnotically At the blue stoneware bowl filled with apples. Feeling, feeling, I wait And quietly hold one blank sheet Throughout the winter afternoon.
